Guardian of the North (Descendants of Robin Hood, #1)

The story opens with a group of Hunters sitting around a campfire, led by the Sheriff Androuet. Among them is a young Wind Rangerian, named Orin who is desperate to prove himself. News comes that the fourth Wind Rangerian has been found, and the Hunters set off to capture him.

We then shift to our main character, Jack. While training with his friends Nick (Lightning Rangerian), Kara (Fire Rangerian), and Natanian (Ice Rangerian), Jack and Nick are summoned for a surprise council with the king of their court. During this council, we learn that three of the four Wind Rangerians have gone missing. Jack is the fourth, and his North Wind power is about to manifest, so the king expects an attack on the court that night. He suspects the Ealdra have found a weapon they need the four Winds to activate. It’s also revealed in this council that Nick used to be part of the Ealdra nation—long-standing rivals to the Áccyn which the main characters are a part of now.

We then jump to the night Jack’s power is set to manifest. The Manifestation Ceremony is a court-wide event, and everyone is dressed in their finest uniforms. Jack reminisces about his great-grandfather Rowan Tyler, who was the last North Wind Rangerian. He meets his new Master, named Kane, who is the person assigned to train him in his new power. Jack notes that Master Kane seems quite young to be training True Borns like him—the most powerful among Rangerians.

During the ceremony, despite the king’s extra defenses, the Ealdra and the Sheriff attack. Master Kane is killed. Jack, Nick, and Kara are attacked by an Ealdra Water Rangerian, who turns out to be one of Nick’s close friends when he was an Ealdra soldier. Jack and Nick escape on their Perytons as Kara is holding the Water Rangerian off.

Jack and Nick land in the woods outside their castle, and are met by Nick’s Master, named Bancroft. Shortly after, Natanian arrives, severely wounded. Jack offers to lead their group to his aunt who’s a nurse and lives just across the Wyoming border.

The group arrives at Aunt Isabel’s house, and Aunt Isabel manages to heal Natanian. The days pass as Natanian heals, and Master Bancroft agrees to train Jack in his new North Wind power.

One day, during one of Jack’s training sessions, he spots an archer watching them from the tree line, shadowed and dressed in dark clothing. Nick and Jack run after the archer, but she manages to slip away. When they return to Aunt Isabel’s house, they discover a note left by the archer that confirms the Sheriff is hunting Jack solely for his power. They also discuss the high possibility that there is a spy in their home court who let the Sheriff and the Ealdra in. The group decides it’s safest to leave Aunt Isabel’s house, but not before Aunt Isabel gives Jack his great-grandfather’s satchel with a few old photos of him and his friends inside.

The next night, the Sheriff and his Hunters arrive at Aunt Isabel’s house. Her fate is uncertain.

We then move back to Jack & Co., who are camping in the woods somewhere near the Canadian border. They reminisce about how much they miss Kara, and hope their court survived the attack. Natanian—an Ice Rangerian—offers to help Jack train. Slowly, with the help of his friends, Jack begins to learn how to control his chaotic North Wind power. Natanian reveals that his power manifested when he was in his family’s home in Maine. His home was attacked by creepy monsters that only he seemed to be able to see. He knows his parents are dead. He doesn’t know what happened to his younger sisters.

They continue moving farther north, hoping to put distance between them and the Sheriff. But one night, the Water Rangerian and Nick’s old friend—Daniel—shows up with Ealdra reinforcements. He calls Nick a traitor, and battle ensues. In the burning forest fire, Jack is injured, and gets lost.

On his own now, certain his friends have been captured by the Ealdra, Jack manages to follow their trail back to the Ealdra palace. He encounters the Dark Archer again—it appears she’s following them. He sneaks inside the palace, and is immediately confronted by a creepy sorcerer who talks in a strange way, giving Jack an unnerving feeling that this sorcerer might be the immortal Sorcerer Gisborne, who cursed the Golden Arrow that accidentally gave Rangerians their powers a thousand years ago.

We cut to elsewhere in the palace, where the Sorcerer (insinuated to be Guy of Gisborne and sometimes named “The Darkness,”) is chastising the Sheriff for letting Jack get away. He puts the Wind Rangerian traveling with the Hunters—named Orin—in charge in place of the Sheriff.

We then cut back to the sorcerer leading Jack through the dungeons. Jack is faced with a series of eerie illusions conjured by the sorcerer that show Aunt Isabel and his Peryton injured and pleading for help. Jack catches up with Natanian, who is facing an illusion of a creepy monster, like what attacked him and his family, described like this: “It looked like a man, folded over, moving on his hands and feet. Its skin was leathery, its muscles glowing faintly with a cold, pulsing light. It had no eyes. It bared its teeth, turning its head to face Natanian. Rough horns stabbed out from its skull that carved in toward each other, the dark red tips shining sharp. It smelled like smoke, and dust, and the rotting brine of the sea all rolled into one. It laughed, a rasping, ringing snort that chilled the blood in my veins.”

As Jack and Natanian flee the monsters and the sorcerer, Jack is cornered in an empty cell, and the sorcerer shifts into Nick. The real Nick electrocutes the sorcerer. Daniel appears, and Jack and Nick are imprisoned in the dungeons. Daniel calls Nick a “traitor prince,” and Nick reveals the palace they’re in is actually his father’s, making Nick the Ealdra crown prince.

Elsewhere in the dungeons, the East Wind Rangerian—a girl named Khadija—is talking to her friend Colton who came down to visit her. Khadija is nicknamed the “Dragon” and imprisoned here because when her power manifested, she accidentally burned someone alive. She is also Nick’s sister, and now the crown princess to the throne since he left. In the cell next to her, an Azomien (a mystical talking panther) is attempting to help her control her Wind power.

We jump back to Jack and Nick. Nick uses his Lightning power to melt the locks of the cells, and they escape, rescuing Bancroft, Khadija, and the Azomien along the way, but Natanian is missing.

The group finds Natanian up in the castle, where he is being held hostage by the king (Nick and Khadija’s father). Nick confronts his father while the rest of the group (Jack, Master Bancroft, Natanian, Khadija, and Colton) escape on their Perytons. Jack circles back for Nick, and everyone flies away.

Recuperating back at camp, the group debates who Daniel found them in the woods, and grows ever more paranoid about a spy in their midst. The Azomien—Daetho—offers to train Jack and bring him back to the Azomien haven called Lake Cloudia.

A message comes from Jack’s home court Fort Calmier that they are once again under attack, but this time, Sorcerer Gisborne is there too. The group flies to the rescue.

Jack & Co. arrive at Fort Calmier to find it in ruins with a thick fog (remnants of powerful sorcery) hanging over it. The Dark Archer is also in the ruins. They capture her, and she reveals her name is Niskian Fortunati. She is the Shadow Rangerian. The whole thing turns out be an ambush, and the group is plunged into a massive battle with the Ealdra, Sheriff, and Ealdra Red Queen. They are reunited with the court soldiers and Fire Rangerian Kara, the Dark Archer goes after Jack insisting he tell her where the Golden Arrow is (he has no idea), Master Kane is revealed to be alive but in bad shape, and finally the four Wind Rangerians are captured and brought before the Red Queen.

The Red Queen is a sorcerer, and begins weaving her magic around the four Rangerians, stealing their magic to channel into a pillar of golden light. Jack breaks free before the spell can strip their power completely away. The pillar of gold light falls to reveal a man in earthy brown robes who the Red Queen addresses as “My King.” This Gold King vanishes, and Jack with a newfound confidence faces Orin—the South Wind Rangerian who has been traveling with the Hunters.

Orin is captured, the people of Fort Calmier leave to begin building a new camp, and Jack, Nick, Khadija, Colton, Kara, Natanian, Master Bancroft, Master Kane, the Azomien Daetho, and the captured Orin all go to Lake Cloudia.

Lake Cloudia is a jungle island set in a massive lake where all the Azomien live. The group spends some time recuperating in this safe haven, and reflect on all the craziness they went through. Nick, describing his relationship with Daniel, mentions in his frustration he told the Ealdra not to send Daniel of all people after them, and Jack suddenly has a horrifying realization. Nick is the spy who has been feeding his location back to the Ealdra. But more than that, Nick is possessed by Sorcerer Gisborne, who has been pulling the strings all along. The Azomien drive Nick out of Lake Cloudia, and land Jack with a warning. “Alert the Áccyn.  Throw up all our defenses around the Golden Arrow. Gisborne has a new host. The Ealdra are coming, and they will not be stopped.”

Curse of the Arrow (Descendants of Robin Hood, #2)

The story opens on a young Jack standing with his great-grandfather, Rowan Tyler, on the battlements of Fort Calmier. Grandpa Tyler tells a story about Titans among the galaxies, gods that infuse their worlds with their own pure magic. It’s from this magic that Rangerians and sorcerers get their power. Grandpa Tyler describes a plan where Jack will become the North Wind Rangerian, and he will use his power to serve the King of the Earth—Crius—and bring an end to the feud between the Áccyn and the Ealdra.

We then jump to the Ealdra dungeons, where Niskian (the Dark Archer) is imprisoned and growing weak. Nick (possessed by Sorcerer Gisborne) kills the Sheriff, then turns to interrogate Niskian about what she knows of the Golden Arrowhead. The Golden Arrow was broken into two pieces, and the only missing piece is the arrowhead. Across the dungeons, we see another Rangerian silently judging how the Dark Archer is handling her interrogation. We secretly see that this Rangerian has the Golden Arrowhead hidden in his boot.

We then move to Jack’s point of view. He is struggling with the realization that his best friend Nick is possessed by Gisborne. He, Natanian, and Kara are all still on Lake Cloudia. Daetho approaches Jack, questioning him about the Golden Arrow, saying Jack has to know something, since Grandpa Tyler was one of the last ones to see it. Daetho snarls at Jack to “not leave the island” until Jack can tell him what he wants to know.

Furious that Daetho would think he was a traitor or a risk to the Azomien, Jack storms off to Master Kane. Master Kane reveals that Rowan Tyler helped transport the Golden Arrow from Fort Calmier to a safe house, but the caravan was attacked, the Arrow shattered in half with only the Arrow shaft making it to the safe house. Rowan Tyler was one of only a few survivors of the attack. Master Kane explains that probably Daetho’s just scared, which is why he lashed out at Jack.

Jack continues practicing his North Wind power under the tutelage of Master Kane, and is now learning (none too successfully) to use his power to fly.

A day or two later, Jack is awakened by Kara with the news that “a guy with a gun” is looking for him. Jack goes to Daetho’s council chamber, where he meets a strange teenage boy named Connor Avidor who calls himself an “agent” and carries a black pistol. Somehow unrelated to his “agent” status, Avidor explains he is from the secret third nation of Robin Hood’s descendants called the Narrunceni. He explains: “Before the Sorcerer Gisborne’s backfired curse fully developed into the power you bear today, that raw magic was passed into Robin Hood’s first child and mutated. Her power never split or weakened among her descendants. They all carry her original magic.” The Narrunceni were forced to flee into hiding. Daetho is extremely distrustful of Avidor and the Narrunceni, bearing some grudge between the Azomien and Narrunceni.

It’s revealed that Khadija was sent to Narruncen to train in her power because she still can’t control it.

Agent Avidor asks Jack to join him in the search for the Golden Arrow, since Jack is Rowan Tyler’s descendant. Daetho is very much against this plan, and says “I am not going to allow the Narrunceni to get involved in our wary! You carry such violence with your every move! And if, Stars forbid, Arashi is found and returns, many will die, Jackson.”

Council is then interrupted by a small Azomien kitten named Koni who tumbles in chasing a blue dragonfly. Jack helps him catch it, and Daetho orders Koni to leave.

Then, Niskian is led into the council by an Azomien, along with a Light Rangerian we recognize as the boy who secretly has the Golden Arrowhead. This boy is named Sam, and his bare chest is criss-crossed with scars that all glow with Light. They tell a story of how they woke up on the shores of Lake Cloudia, presumably dumped there by Sorcerer Gisborne.

The councilors discuss potential next actions of the Ealdra, including the confirmation that the Gold King raised by the Ealdra at the end of Guardian of the North is in fact the Titan Crius who Grandpa Tyler wanted Jack to help. Jack realizes his Grandpa Tyler probably was a secret spy for the Ealdra.

Looking through Jack’s pictures of Rowan Tyler, the council recognizes a man named Eduard Karzen, the last East Wind Rangerian before Khadija and a close friend of Grandpa Tyler. Jack agrees to help Agent Avidor find the Arrow in an attempt to prove Daetho wrong, that he’s not his grandpa. Daetho instead puts Jack under house arrest, to be guarded day and night and not be allowed to leave the island.

We cut to the Ealdra dungeons, where Sorcerer Gisborne has a Narrunceni queen imprisoned, and is torturing her for information. Apparently all Narrunceni can communicate telepathically with each other, so she is able to communicate with Agent Avidor and feed that information back to Sorcerer Gisborne. Gisborne learns that Jack has the best shot to meet his grandpa’s best friend and recover the arrow, but is trapped on Lake Cloudia. Gisborne hatches a plan to get Jack free.

Now Jack is channeling all his anger at Daetho into his training. He successfully uses his Wind to fly, and even carries Kara on a looping flight around the island coast. Unbeknownst to any of them, Sorcerer Gisborne has arrived on the island and is watching Jack goof off.

As Jack finishes his training session, now in a much better mood, Sorcerer Gisborne reveals himself, still possessing Nick’s body. Jack takes in Nick’s new appearance a moment before battle breaks out. Gisborne brought reinforcements in the form of Orin, who now takes over the title of Sheriff, and Ealdra Rangerians.

Agent Avidor reveals even though he is a Narrunceni by birth, by some fluke of nature he doesn’t have their power. He helps Jack, Kara, Natanian, Master Kane, Niskian, and Sam escape anyways. During their escape, Master Kane reveals he’s also a Narrunceni—which explains why he was able to become a Master at such a young age (in his twenties). Jack also picks up the Azomien kitten, Koni.

We cut back to the Ealdra palace, where the Red Queen is yelling at Sorcerer Gisborne because he completely destroyed Lake Cloudia instead of focusing on just freeing Jack. She accuses him of having a vendetta against the Azomien (probably valid, as the Azomien’s original intention for their safe haven was to build shields against Gisborne). The Red Queen accuses Gisborne of being afraid of Arashi (a powerful player yet unknown to us readers). Gisborne blatantly denies this, but we as readers can see there’s probably some truth to it.

Back with Jack & Co., their group has hit the thrift store for some normal-looking clothes and are in Paradise, California where Eduard Karzen is. They learn he’s probably making an appearance at the town’s harvest festival, so they stash their weapons in a safe place and head in. Some light shenanigans ensue, including the group accidentally short-circuiting electricity and Koni being offered cat treats, which he whispers at Kara to turn down.

The group finally locates Eduard Karzen—a very old blind man in a wheelchair. He is joined by his great-granddaughter Emily and her newborn daughter Everette. Eduard recognizes Jack as a North Wind Rangerian—just like Rowan Tyler—and agrees to talk. Emily refuses to leave his side, so the group has to start at the beginning and give her the context of their whole world. Eduard, firmly stuck in his Ealdra ideology, encourages the group to help Crius however they can. As they’re all talking in the green room, the electricity short-circuits and the lights go out, leaving Sam and his glowing scars the only source of light in the space. At this moment, Eduard recognizes him. Eduard reveals that a very young Sam had stowed away with his father—an Áccyn general—and was one of the only survivors along with Eduard and Rowan Tyler when they landed on Narruncen—the target destination where the Arrow would be kept safe. Sam was the actual last one to see the Arrow as it shattered and fell to the ocean. Sam reveals the Arrowhead stashed in his boot.

Sorcerer Gisborne visits Jack in a dream-like illusion in the middle of the chat with Eduard, and Jack accidentally reveals Sam has the Arrowhead. Gisborne teleports through the illusion and lands in the middle of the group as Sheriff Orin and his Hunters arrive at the festival.

In a mad scramble, Jack & Co. simultaneously try to grab the Arrowhead from Sam and escape the Sorcerer. But the Sorcerer summons the creepy humanoid monsters from Natanian’s past, and suddenly an escape is a whole lot more difficult.

As Jack is cornered by monsters, the kitten Koni flies to his rescue, suddenly transforming into a man who decimates the monsters. This is Arashi, a powerful Narrunceni and a sorcerer to rival Gisborne.

In the battle raging around them, Emily is killed, leaving baby Everette in the care of Jack & Co. Kara chases after Daniel, but is knocked out by Gisborne. Gisborne kills Daniel for going against his orders earlier in the book. Jack and Orin have a rematch fight. We also learn that the reason Niskian was hunting the Arrow in Guardian of the North was to use its power to go against Sorcerer Gisborne, who has her little brother captive.

Then the earth trembles in warning that Crius is about to show up. Arashi/Koni uses his power to buy the group some time to escape before passing out from the exertion. The group escapes at the last minute.

Back in the Ealdra palace, the Red Queen is once again furious at Sorcerer Gisborne, this time because he didn’t realize Sam had the Arrowhead. Sorcerer Gisborne begins concocting a plan to overthrow the Red Queen. It’s revealed that the Red Queen has disguised herself as the Narrunceni queen and gone undercover on Narruncen while Gisborne kills the real Narrunceni queen.

Jack & Co. arrive on Narruncen—which is actually the lost capital city of Atlantis swept out to sea a thousand years ago. The Narrunceni people tend to the wounded. Agent Avidor explains the Narrunceni worship the Titan Rheia—Crius’s twin who was imprisoned by him. The island is split into three groups of people: Nazilo (the regular citizens), Drakino (the soldiers), and Aylassekro (the priests). As Jack explores the island, he finds a statue of Arashi/Koni.

We see Khadija and Natanian sit together, relating to each other about their various traumas. Natanian encourages her to embrace the violence behind her power, which leads Khadija to kill Eduard because he destroyed the East Wind Tyrest that would have allowed her to control her power. (Tyrests are magical pieces of jewelry worn by True Born Rangerians to help them control their power while they’re still learning to use it). Khadija’s power backfires on her, burning half her face.

Then, we see Jack and Arashi attend a council meeting at Conclave Hall where we see Arashi take his position as a powerful leader among the Narrunceni, at the same time being very gentle with Jack’s willingness to discuss his Grandpa Tyler as a traitor. Sam is arrested, and is real grumpy about the whole situation.

Arashi reveals the Arrow shaft that everyone thought was safe on Narruncen is actually a decoy, and that he hid the real one in Sherwood Forest. Arashi takes Jack, Natanian, Kara, Agent Avidor, and Khadija with him to Sherwood to retrieve it.

In Sherwood Forest, Arashi removes the illusions hiding the Arrow shaft. Agent Avidor reveals he works for some mysterious spy organization called “890,” and has agents standing by if their plan blows up. Natanian ambushes Sorcerer Gisborne who showed up to retrieve the Arrowhead as well.

Arashi calls the Sorcerer by his real name, “Ishkur Ghiseburne.” Ishkur then reveals that Arashi is an immortal just like him and is not Narrunceni at all. “When Robin lay sick with my curse, Arashi tried to help. The curse blasted straight through him, coursing through his body like lightning. He’s not Narrunceni. His power is only a similar strand to what they hold. But his strength goes so far beyond theirs.”

The group and Ishkur fight for the two pieces of the Golden Arrow. At one point, Khadija faces him down, but is stabbed in the stomach. Arashi uses his magic to heal her, then passes out from the exertion. The creepy humanoid monsters show up and kidnap Natanian. Jack freaks out, now so paranoid he heeds Ishkur and Crius’s warning and thinks Arashi’s the real bad guy because so many people died since he showed up. Arashi promises “I am not your villain.” Jack comes around again.

Avidor’s agents show up, guns trained on Ishkur. Jack panics and tells them not to kill Ishkur, that Nick is still alive in that body somewhere. The agents fire to incapacitate, but Ishkur throws their bullets back at them and slaughters the whole group of agents to the horror of Avidor.

Jack fights Nick in an echo of the opening sparring session in Guardian of the North. Ishkur combines the Arrowhead and the Arrow shaft and uses it to restore Crius’s full power—and to boost his own sorcery beyond Arashi’s. Jack touches the Arrow and it blasts him with sorcery, short-circuiting his Wind.

Jack, Kara, Avidor, and Arashi team up against Ishkur and successfully defeat him.
